Are you looking to run a restaurant site that is localized, works in a great way on both mobiles and desktop computers and can showcase your delicious foods or dishes with the best design? Here, we highly recommend you to choose WordPress for achieving this goal. With the responsive restaurant theme and a few lightweight plugins, you can impress your guests greatly and give them enough information needed for choosing your restaurant and reserving a table.
In the following, we’d like to list some steps and tips about how to set up a WordPress restaurant site.
Step 1 – Install a WordPress Restaurant Theme
In fact, this step is mainly for some newbies who do not know how to start the restaurant site. If you have some certain levels of site building knowledge, you simply can pass this step and go ahead. As for the selection of the restaurant theme, we have listed useful tips you’d better take into account.
- It would be better to have a full-width showcase section to display your hot dishes or today’s special.
- The theme needs to have a special area for you to introduce your restaurant stories and histories.
- The theme needs to be 100% responsive so that your guests can check your site and book your table online easily.
- The overall theme style needs to be colorful. The dark and plain appearance is not suitable for a restaurant site.
In our example, we use the Restaurant Lite theme, which is a free one and can be downloaded from WordPress Theme Directory. Just check its preview in the following and get some inspirations when choosing your restaurant template.
Step 2 – Create the Contact Us Page
The Contact Us page is pretty essential, with which your potential guests can find you easily to get more detailed information about your restaurant. In this case, you’d better display your email address, fax number and phone number in this special webpage.
In addition, as people may check your site using the mobile, you can make your phone number clickable for calling. This can save much time and effort for people to contact you. Have no idea of how to do this? Just check this how-to tutorial.
Step 3 – Showcase Your Location
Surely, you need to tell people where your physical restaurant is and how can they get to the right place. Some webmasters choose to point out their locations using the simple words on the About Us page. But personally, we recommend you to use the Google Map to showcase your physical location in a vivid manner.
Previously, we have already introduced how to add Google Map to your website either using the related plugins or via a manual way. Check the detailed information from this page.
Step 4 – Create Your Restaurant Menu
This is another essential component for the restaurant website. After all, people need to know what you can offer, along with the detailed information. Here, you need to make the menu as interactive as possible. Never make it a Flash or a downloadable PDF file. As for the information of the menu, you should showcase the food images, prices, detailed introductions, nutrition, ingredients and many more.
Some experienced webmasters can leverage the gallery system offered by the template to create a great menu. However, if you do not have the related expertise, you can consider the Food and Drink Menu plugin.
After installing this menu plugin, you firstly need to get to its settings page to choose the style for menus display. There are two options available – Base Format and Classic Style.
In addition, if you do not want to display the detailed price of each menu item, yon can disable the pricing feature. Even, you photo width and height of the food image can be determined by you freely.
Now, you can click the Add Menu Item button from the Menu Items tab. The menu item means your food and drink. The process is just like publishing a blog post. You simply need to enter the food name, detailed information, price, showcase order and image.
Here, from the right side of the screen, you can find a special Menu Sections box. It works as the categorization system to better group your food. In this case, you need to create some sections with the names such as Break-first, Lunch and Dinner, and put your menu item into the corresponding group.
Now, simply click the Publish button. Note that this plugin allows you to create as many items as you want.
Next, you can create your restaurant menu by clicking the Add Menu button. In the editing page, you can add some textual introductions on both the main menu page and the footer section. After that, you need to scroll down to check out the Menu Layout area and add your previously created menu sections into any column you want.
Then, you only need to publish this menu. Note that the plugin will generate an exclusive shortcode, and you need to copy and paste it into the sidebar or any webpage you want to display the menu. The final result just looks like the below screenshot.
Step 5 – Add the Reservation System
Allowing your guests to reserve a table online is essential for any restaurant site, so you need to achieve an easy reservation system. Here, we highly recommend you to try the Restaurant Reservations plugin.
Upon the installation, you need to click the Settings button from the Bookings tab to finish the General Configurations, Booking Schedule settings and Notification settings.
Here, you need to choose a special page to display the reservation system. If you do not have yet, simply create one and pick it from the drop-down of Booking Page. After that, you should decide the maximum party size. Here, you need to evaluate the max number of people your restaurant can afford.
Besides these, you also need to decide the success message and the format of date and time for reservation.
To maintain the proper reserving schedule on your site, you need to define the exact arrangement of when you accept reservations and when do not. Also, you need to determine how early or how late people can reserve a table, along with the proper time interval.
All of these aspects can be determined in this part.
As your guests need to be informed of the reserving progress, you can configure this aspect for deciding the email templates for reservation confirmation and rejection.
As everything is configured properly, now, you can click the Save button. After that, the plugin will automatically display the reservation form on the booking page you have selected previously. Here, we highly recommend you to add this page to the navigation bar of your site.
Step 6 – Add Star Rating, Online Order and Upcoming Event Systems
If you are confident enough for your food, you’d better add the star rating system to showcase how people are satisfied with your restaurant. To be frank, this is much more convincing than advertisements to better promote your physical restaurant.
In addition, if your restaurant has the take-out service, you need to add the online order system so that people can get your food directly online. This plugin can help you do this easily.
Also, if you sometimes will launch special events for particular festivals, the upcoming event display is also essential.
